The fourth Mario Kart game, the third for a console. Double Dash added
new twist to the franchise, two racers per kart.
Unlike the previous Mario Karts that had 8 racer, you now start have
with much more, and can unlock even more. You can match any 2 racers on
a kart, so have Bowser and Mario race together, Diddy and DK, etc.
You also get to select from a decent variety of karts to race in.
There are 3 racer sizes. So if you pick a small and a large racer, you
must race in a large kart, if you select two small racers, you can
decide to race in a small, medium, or large kart.
Racing is pretty much the same as the previous Mario Kart games. Race
around a variety of Mario-type themed tracks and try and get 1st. Use a
large assortment of items, such as shell to hit other racers, banana
peels to make them slip, mushrooms for a speed boost.
But this game now gives racers there own special ability. Such as,
Mario and Luigi shoots a row of fireballs, DK and Diddy have a Giant
Banana Peel, Baby Mario and Luigi have a giant chain-chomp which pulls
them across the track and hits other racers in the way, etc.
Since there are two racers per kart, the one on the back can use an
item if they have one, and the one on the front drives, you can quickly
and easily switch them throughout the race by simply pressing Z. Since
there are two racers, you can now hold onto two items at once.
The game also of course has battle mode with some new arenas.
The game can be played up too 4 players on one Gamecube, or can be
connected with other Gamecubes and play up to 12.
Mario Kart Double Dash has sold well, and continues to do so, but the
Double Kart idea has been seen mixed thoughts. Because of this,
it seems unlikely we will see another Double Kart Mario Kart game in
the future.
