Introduction: A simple little
NES game, which can offer alot. A game that clearly could have
been done with other characters besides Mario and Luigi, but
they sell games. A game that is a perfect addition to the NES
library in how it just is.
Gameplay: Well this is a puzzle
action game. Not big on the puzzle side, but you do have to
occasionally think. Mainly an action game, a fun simple action
game. You just play through tons of rooms/levels, or what
the game calls phases. Each one is set up in a tall vertical
area. The game isn't sidescrolling left or right at all. Just
a locked in area, but you can move up and down on the screen.
There will be ladders to climb, some wreckable, some not.
Platforms to walk on, barrels in the way, not able to pass,
and tons of bricks you have to brake.
Let's get to the
point of the game. There will be wreckable bricks in each
level, you have to brake them all to complete that level. Now
you will start on a certain part of each level, and you will
sometimes have to move, and go in a certain order, or else you
will be unable to get to some bricks. Some ladders are
wreckable, so you'll have to wreck them at the right time. You
can just fall off platforms, this will come into play
sometimes. Like in Mario Bros, you can just run off the screen
to the right or left, and be transported to the other
side. Now if this was all the game was, it would be
incredibly dull, pointless, and very easy. But there are
enemies that will chase you around. You can't really fight
them, so you just have to try and run away and avoid them, all
the while trying to wreck all the bricks. This can get pretty
fast-paced sometimes, as some bricks require you hit them
multiple times to be destroyed, so you'll be standing there,
tapping the button, quickly trying to brake a brick while an
enemy comes closer and closer.
It's all in all, a
pretty simple game, that can provide some entertainment for
some decent periods of time. You can also select which
level/phase you want to start on at the title screen, so you
can hop right on up to a harder level, which is very good,
even on your first time playing, the first few levels are
quite easy. There is also a 2-Player Mode, just take turns,
like in Super Mario Bros.
Now this is what brings the
score higher, up a couple notches, without this I would
problem never play the game after beating all the phases. You
can build your own levels! Now this is a great little
addition. You get a blank level, and the ability to place
enemies, bricks, ladders, your starting position, and
everything else right where you want it. Then play it
yourself, or challenge someone else to play it. Since this
game is pretty much an action game, you can really make a very
challenging level, and see if you can defeat it.
This
game really has nothing to do with Mario or Luigi. Why would
these two plumbers be putting on hard-hats and braking bricks?
They can't even jump, which is very odd to see in a Mario
title, that's his trademark move. But Nintendo knew, if they
made the characters Mario and Luigi, instead of making two new
bland characters, it would make it sell better, and I'm sure
it did. But I kind of like that. This is a fun NES title, that
I would enjoy with our without Mario and Luigi, but it just
makes it all a but more enjoyable knowing your playing as
Mario and Luigi.
All in all, the game is a fun little
NES title, and is definitely worth playing.
Gameplay 6.5/10
Graphics: Very basic. Pretty
much the bare minimum I'd say. Nothing special at all. The
characters and enemies look basic, the environment is just a
basic black background with generic looking bricks and
ladders. But the graphics does the job.
Graphics 5/10
Sound: Once again, they didn't
go all out on the sound, very basic as well. The background
tune is ok, fits well enough. Some of the soundfx are decent
enough, some are pretty good. Nothing really
memorable.

Challenge: The game really does
have a decent challenge for the game it is. Especially because
they threw in the level editor. Putting in tons of enemies
there can sure make the game challenging and you moving fast,
trying to stay one step ahead of them. The game gives off a
decent challenge, nothing you'll be upset with by how easy it
is, or how incredibly hard it is.
Challenge 7/10
Replayability: Ok
replayability. Mentioning again the level editor, which really
does add to the replayability. But since the phases are set
up, you might get into a routine of where to go, and what to
do at the right time. Making replaying it dull. When you think
of a game like Mario Bros., where you can simple replay it
over and over again, just trying to get a higher and higher
score, while there are more enemies, and everything moves
faster, you see how this game isn't that
replayable.
Replayability
6/10
Frustration: Not a frustrating
game. Just move along, and try and beat each
phase.
Value: This
game is pretty cheap. Around $5 or less. And for that amount,
its a good buy. But I really wouldn't pay more than that. If
it were $10, I would pass on it. There are better NES games
out there for $10. But there are alot of worse NES games than
this for $5.
Overall: All in all this is a
good NES game. I'm glad they made it. It provides some fun
times. You'll have some fun with it, have some fun trying to
design a cool level, worth a play.
Wrecking Crew 6.5/10
Conclusion: It's a fun simple
title, that is worth playing. It's not your average Mario
title at that, quite different. But play the game for what it
is, a simple little NES title.
